The shrine Yasaka Jinja is dedicated to the deity Susano-o-no-Mikoto his wife and sons. The shrine is believed to have been established in 656 almost 140 years before this settlement became the capital of Japan. Today's Gion Matsuri (festival) derives from an appeal to the shrine deities in 869 for relief from an epidemic rampaging through the city. The deities were revered by ordinary people all over Japan. Today more than 3000 shrines throughout the country are dedicated to the Yasaka deities. |
