The temple Shoren-in is one of the five 'monzeki' temples of the Tendai Buddhist sect in Kyoto. Traditionally the head priest of the 'Monzeki' temple is related to the imperial family. Shoren-in has also been known as 'Awata Palace'.  It has been used as a temporary imperial palace after the fire in 1788, that destroyed part of the town.
